A Case Study of Developmental Play Therapy for a Child with Developmental Delay
Kim Na-Young

Shim Hae-Won
Abstract
This is a case study of structured play therapy for a child showing developmental delay. The therapy was aimed at improving interpersonal relationship and enhancing self-confidence of the child who showed physical and speech delay from the early stage of development. He had problems continuously with his peers and teachers at his kindergarten, which referred him to play therapy. When he was first brought for therapy, his mother refused to have her child receive psychological evaluation and showed a strong belief that his son would catch up with normal development as he became older. She also had no accurate understanding of her son¡¯s developmental level and problematic behaviors. During the early stages of the therapy, the child did not make proper eye contact and rarely exhibited verbal expression. There was almost no interaction between the child and the therapist. He was absorbed in playing alone and being indulged in his
own world, showing autistic tendencies. The initial goal was to help him experience a sense of emotional stability and promote interaction with the therapist by increasing intimacy with the therapist. From the middle stage of the treatment, structured play therapy was administered to help him promote development and acquire social skills. The child showed increased desires to interact with the therapist from the middle stage of the therapy. His verbal expression began to increase while he responded to the therapist¡¯s questions and he was able to express his intentions verbally.
